Recommendation: This program is designed for students who are intrested in interdisciplinary fields, expecially biomedical engineering, biomaterials, tissue engineering, and human diseases.
Abstract
Organ-on-a-chip system is a kind of new biomedical research method to recapitulate organ-level structures and functions for drug evaluation and disease model. It can be used to simulate the microstructure, microenvironment, and functional features of human organ, and have a potential to be applied in drug screening and clinical diagnosis and treatment. It will focus on the fundamental understanding of structure-function relationships in normal and pathological mammalian tissues or organs and the development of biological substitutes to restore, maintain or improve organ functions. Building physiological and pathological organ on a chip will provide a good platform for biomedical research. The greatest value of sophisticated organs-on-chips for the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries may lie in the validation and prioritization of lead drug candidates, and the chips may be used to identify new biomarkers of drug efficacy, toxicity or disease response for clinical trials. These organ-on-a-chip systems may open up new horizons in biomedical research and industrialization prospect.
This program is mainly releated with the organs, such as liver, Lung, spleen, and vascular system. It is associating with interdisciplinary fields between microfluidic chip and tissue engineering open to students who are actively interested in the emerging fields of multiple softwares design (e.g. auto-CAD, 3D max, comsol simulation), microfabrication technologies (e.g. Soft lithography, 3D bioprinting, microfludic chip), new materials (e.g. biomaterials, photonic crystal materials), and biological technologies (e.g. biological sensing and imaging, devices). Students will undergo rigorous scientific training for experimental operation, software application, micro-machining and paper writing in research lab.
