课题背景
随着经济全球化的加速发展,不仅国内各地的商务交流沟通日趋频繁,国际商务交流与合作同样也已经全方位展开。不论是国内生产活动,还是国际贸易,这些往往是跨越民族和文化的,从而使跨国生产与贸易成为一种跨文化的沟通。文化的差异也就难免给商务合作造成摩擦和障碍。要消除这些摩擦和障碍,提高跨文化商务沟通的能力也就越来越重要,甚至成了决定商务活动成功与否的关键因素。在合作过程中的文化差异,以及是否能用合适的方式和语言魅力进行顺利而巧妙的沟通从而达到目的,这就是一种跨文化商务沟通的能力。 但是现阶段,我们大多数学生的跨文化商务沟通能力更注重课本学习,却忽略了所学语言的文化背景,民俗特点以及商务礼仪等等重要问题,导致学生的商务之路成为了思想上的巨人、行动上的矮子。比如,大学生刚刚进入社会,到外企面试,假如面试官是澳大利亚人,你对他竖大拇指,本来是一个表示敬意的动作,可是在澳大利亚这是个极其粗鄙的动作,你无意之下做了此举,可是你的面试之路却到此为止了。这种由于文化差异导致的误会不胜枚举。但是,如果你了解其文化背景,并且能够应对自如,我想进入外企也是不难的。可见,跨文化商务沟通能力是多么重要。



课题内容
本课题的目的是启发学生在中美不同文化之间如何应用相同的沟通形式和理论,同时学生会更多的理解,应用和分析专业的商务人士之间在不同的商务场合之中如何进行有效的沟通,并且在课程的最后让学生能够解决很多跨国以及跨文化商务沟通方面的问题。

 对商业沟通、管理专业感兴趣的高中生,本科生
 修读国际贸易、市场营销等专业,以及未来希望在跨国企业、国际金融、商贸等领域从业的学生
 具备一定英文写作能力和大量英文阅读能力的学生优先

Research Topics for International and Intercultural Business Communication

Research Purpose:

 

This research proposal aims to enlighten students about differences in communicative behaviors between Chinese and U.S. culture. Students are expected to understand, apply, and analyze how business professionals communicate similarly and different in various business contexts. The final research should reflect students’ abilities to tackle business communication problems in international and intercultural business interactions.

 

 

 

Expectations:

 

 

·         Understand basic communication concepts, such as cultural differences, communication principles, and common communication barriers

·         Analyze and apply learned knowledge in research of identified communication phenomena through comparison between the U.S. and Chinese organizations

·         Utilize argument development strategies and methods of influence in persuasion; Develop persuasive and compelling arguments in research

·         Understand and acquire basic academic business writing skills

 

Brief Description:

 

The research topics below are macro-level research directions examined in this class. Students are expected to pick one of the following and further refine the chosen topic, along with their own research interests and the guidance of the professor. In this process, students will develop abilities of critical thinking, information collection, and information analysis. More importantly, the research process will train students to synthesize information, utilize theories and argument development strategies to gain a holistic and in-depth understanding of their interested communication phenomena.

 

 

 

Research Topic One:

 

Communicating Emotion and Emotional Intelligence in Intercultural and International Business Potential sub-topics:

·         Comparison of emotional intelligence and emotional expressions in Chinese and the U.S. workgroups

 

Research Topic Two:

 

Communicating and Managing Conflicts in Intercultural and International Business Potential sub-topics:

·         Managing disagreements in multinational companies

·         Workplace microaggression in multinational workgroups


Research Topic Three:

 

Impression Management in Intercultural and International Business Potential sub-topics:

    • Managing face” in Chinese and U.S. workplace communication

    • Identity crises in Chinese and U.S. workgroups

 

 

 

Research Topic Four:

 

Team Communication in Intercultural and International Business Potential sub-topics:

    • Leadership styles in global virtual teams

    • Conflict management in Chinese and the U.S. long-distance workgroups

 

Research Topic Five:

 

Framing and persuasion in Intercultural and International Business Potential sub-topics:

    • Comparison of Chinese and the U.S. business leaders’ framing styles

    • Comparison of Chinese and the U.S. negotiation Styles

 

 

 

 

A list of readings for each topic will be provided by the professor during the on-site training.
